Cast out of the warband, turned out from His Grace The skin on his back flayed open, no longer can he show his face In the hall where he served his Gwerbret, defended him with his life Came crashing down one mead-soaked night, a victim of his vice And so the long road beckons, his word arm earns his keep, A Silver Dagger in his belt, a sign of the Wyrd that he has reaped Suspicious eyes, they follow, his shame for all to see With his head held high in the star-struck night, bearing his tattered dignity O, Silver Dagger, riding the long road through the night Forsaken Warrior, dishonored, for the coin he fights Disgraced fallen sell-sword, wandering the rest of his days, And when he dies in battle, no bard will ever sing his praise. A life of hardship and tales of woe, is what awaits him on this long and winding road A trail of grief, regret, and broken hearts, a hollow purpose, with honor torn apart… An empty life with bloodstained hands, a mercenary with no kin, no clan, no hope Adrift exile, hardened, battle-scored, he will not rest until his honor is restored A Silver Dagger’s luck, comes roaring through with pride A Silver Dagger’s pride, runs deep within his heart A Silver Dagger’s heart, honor stained for all his life A Silver Dagger’s life, is the price he pays for his luck

Major Tom 05:17
Standing there alone, the ship is waiting All systems are go, are you sure? Control is not convinced But the computer has the evidence No need to abort The countdown starts Watching in a trance, the crew is certain Nothing left to chance, all is working Trying to relax, up in the capsule "Send me up a drink", jokes Major Tom The count goes on 4, 3, 2, 1 Earth below us, drifting falling Floating weightless, calling calling home Second stage is cut, we're now in orbit Stabilizers up, running perfect Starting to collect, requested data What will it effect, when all is done Thinks Major Tom Back at ground control, there is a problem Go to rockets full, not responding Hello Major Tom, are you receiving Turn the thrusters on, we're standing by There's no reply 4, 3, 2, 1 Earth below us, drifting, falling Floating, weightless, calling, calling, home Across the stratosphere A final message, "Give my wife my love" Then nothing more Far beneath the ship, the world is mourning They don't realize, he's alive No one understands but Major Tom sees Now the light commands, this is my home I'm coming home Earth below us, drifting, falling Floating, weightless, coming home Earth below us, drifting, falling Floating, weightless, coming home Earth below us, drifting, falling Floating, weightless, coming, coming home Home

about

Silver Dagger is a song based on the writing of Katharine Kerr. She has written a vast, expansive series of Celtic fantasy novels set in a land called Deverry. In Deverry, a Silver Dagger is a mercenary who fights not for the honor of a Lord or King, but for money. Usually, these sell-swords did something to get themselves banished from honorable service, and must earn their living by fighting for whomever pays them. Silver Daggers are often distrusted and looked down upon, though many times unjustly so.

The origin of the Daggers, however, is not so ignoble. They were formed to help end a century of civil war in Deverry and restore a fractured kingdom under one ruler. However, that ruler's son, fearing that anyone could hire the Daggers and seize a throne, decreed that mercenary troops were forbidden and that Silver Daggers could not ride more than two at a time. As the years passed, the men ad occasional woman who took the Dagger became outcasts, though sometimes they were necessary, and many great fighters became Silver Daggers and turned the tides of more than a few battles, feuds, and conflicts.

To start with the works of Katharine Kerr, begin with her novel Daggerspell. I promise you, it is well worth the read.
