My Life For Yours has several meanings and sources of inspiration. The title comes from a character in Star Wars- Knights of the Old Republic II. Visas Marr was the last survivor of a planet that was consumed by Darth Nihilus. When she joins the crew of the Ebon Hawk, amnd you speak to her, she begins all her dialogue with 'my life for yours'. If you save her and she joins the party, that is... she assumes a life-debt to you. The song is about the burden of owing someone or something a debt that can never truly be repaid. Other references in the song point to the original Dragonlance novels which are rife with notions of honor and moral obligation. The lyrics also reference previous Frost Giant songs.
Also it's about me turning 40 and starting to feel the weight of middle age.
